Daddy Rolo is a pioneering Bay Area DJ and tastemaker with more than 30 years
of influence on the region’s sound.
He cofounded The Pirate DJs in the early ’90s, a crew that helped define the Bay’s
Hip-Hop scene by djing major nightclubs, breaking new records,
and opening for icons such as The Notorious B.I.G., Special Ed, Mobb Deep,
Redman, Wu-Tang Clan, Buju Banton and Beenie Man.
The Pirate DJs had an influential mix show, Pirate Radio, on 106 KMEL, setting the
local music agenda with premieres and high-profile artist interviews.
In 2007 Rolo launched Deadly Mix Radio, a Reggae and Dancehall program that
remains a Friday-night staple on 106 KMEL.
A curator and producer of major Bay Area events, he helped create Reggae Gold in
2003—still running and celebrated for showcasing the best in
Caribbean music. Rolo, continues to shape the scene through radio, live events,
and longtime club residencies.
