Jon Baker Biog
Jon Baker has had over 40 years experience in the music industry. Predominantly based out
of the US, Baker started his early career working with bands such as Spandau Ballet and
Sade in the UK before moving to New York where he was in the epicentre of the burgeoning
hip-hop movement.
In the late 80s, Baker founded the independent label Gee Street Records where he signed,
developed and A&R’d artists such as Rza of Wu-Tang Clan, PM Dawn and the Stereo MCs.
From 1991 - 1996 Baker started a joint venture with Chris Blackwell’s Island Records where
he took a position as Senior Vice President of A&R in New York and President of the Island
Jamaica label.
Baker was Co-President of V2 Records, Richard Branson’s music label from 1996 to 2000
and in the early 2000s he sold his Gee Street Records catalogue to V2 Records.
Over the last 20 years Baker has remained active and present in the music industry,
producing a number of successful albums alongside co-owning and managing the boutique
Geejam Hotel in Port Antonio, Jamaica alongside its premier residential recording studio,
Geejam Studios. In the past 18 months Geejam Studios has hosted a wide range of clients
from The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Megan Thee Stallion, Sam Smith, Bad Bunny and
Gorillaz to name a few.
Baker continues to maintain his relationships within the music industry both past and present
as well as heading up Geejam Music Group, an active publishing and recording company
that sits under the Geejam umbrella.
